Business Data Base

Since January 2017, the Foundation has screened over 2000 Businesses and Startups which had developed products, services and/or job programs that were focused on lifting the livelihoods of the poor.  Utilizing a screening methodology described below, the Foundation has narrowed this list to 200 businesses and startups. Our work is ongoing and global and we hope to double this database to 400 businesses and startups by the end of 2019.

The Social Ventures Foundation's database has been developed in connection with an adaption  of the checklist in the Stanford Social Innovation Review article, “The Power of Simple and Clear Definition.” (Tafel and Garlow)  This checklist together with additional vetting is centered on 8 objectives:

  • The entrepreneur is a tenacious leader with a pragmatic vision.

  • The business solution addresses a clear social problem in connection with authentically raising the livelihoods of the poor.

  • The business solution changes systems, not just symptoms of the problem.

  • The business model prioritizes social impact over financial gain.

  • The business model for developing nations is potentially scalable and transformative for over 100 million people making under $3 to $4 a day.

  • The business model generates a sustainable funding stream.

  • The business product or service is environmentally sustainable.

  • The business mission is non-secular and non-partisan.

  • The business can scale to reach millions of the world's poor.

All individuals and team members of the Social Ventures Foundation involved in the database vetting process will have no financial interest, relationship or affiliation with any startup or business that undergoes the vetting process.
